The prayer house of the Hasidim, the Maharama and Maharshala synagogues, and the prayer houses and prayer rooms of the craft guilds exuded an aura of sanctity over the workaday commercial bustle. Dustcovered porters who stood around waiting for the chance to make a few groszy would duck into the hasidic prayer house every now and again to enjoy the velvet sounds of the voices raised in song”.
